The specialty of Family and Community Medicine has emerged in Spain as in other industrialized countries, to provide better quality care to the population and to streamline the health system as a whole.
With the full development of this specialty primary care level is acquiring the appropriate role, so that it can solve most health problems presented by people in a coordinated manner with other specialists working in secondary care (hospital and outpatient services) and allowing, therefore, the proper functioning of the entire system.
With the creation of primary care teams, specialists in Family Medicine have introduced important changes in primary care: better clinical care, teamwork, prevention and health promotion, family practice, incorporation of teaching and research and community activities.
The challenge of health professionals is to provide quality care to the growing population, and to do essentially is to train good specialists, who then are competent. This requires sustained efforts of all physicians, both those working in health centers as they do in hospital structures and a clear commitment by the Administration, providing the necessary resources.
The teaching of future specialists should be based primarily on the daily learning with their tutors, who must serve as a model, and the incorporation of new technologies and training methodologies to supplement other aspects of training.
This educational program is the result of the experience of more than twelve years of residency training, and intends to apply these new teaching methodologies to this training, performing all tasks based on learning, teaching objectives defined in their knowledge, skills and attitudes.
It is also necessary to establish quality assurance mechanisms throughout the teaching process, for which place great importance on the assessment of teachers and students, as well as the accreditation of health facilities and the tutors in these centers. We hope that this program will help teachers above, and spirit that many specialists have worked in Family Practice in recent years.
