Program Description
The Special Milk Program (SMP, for its acronym in English) provides Federal reimbursement for milk served to children in schools and childcare institutions that do not participate in federal food programs.
Any school or child care institution, nonprofit, including summer camps and temporary shelters, may participate in the SMP provided it does not participate in a food service program,
For example, the National School Lunch Program (NSLP for its acronym in English) or the School Breakfast Program (SBP, for its acronym in English). Schools participating in the NSLP or can participate in SMP to provide milk to children in pre-kindergarten and half-day kindergarten where children have no access to any of the school meal programs.
The sponsors of the SMP have the option of offering milk free to qualifying children. Any child of a family that meets income guidelines established by the Department of Agriculture (USDA, for its acronym in English), can receive free milk.
